Navigating the Agile Journey- Agile Maturity Assessments

The journey to Agile success is unique for each organization. It’s a path often marked by various levels of understanding, execution, and maturity across different teams. As someone deeply involved in Agile coaching and methodologies, I’ve come across a fascinating perspective on managing Agile teams, one that diverges from conventional wisdom yet offers profound insights.

A recent conversation with V. Lee Henson, an esteemed Agile coach, brought forth an intriguing approach to Agile maturity assessment. Typically, organizations strive to balance teams by distributing their best members across various groups. However, Henson, along with Mike Cohn, a notable figure in the Agile community, suggests a different strategy. Their advice? Focus on building one 'superpower' team that excels in Agile practices. This team becomes a model for others, setting a standard of excellence and guiding the rest of the organization in their Agile journey.

This approach emphasizes the importance of having a beacon within the organization, a team that others can look up to and learn from. It’s about creating a center of Agile excellence, a source of inspiration and practical guidance for other teams striving to improve their Agile practices.

But what about measuring Agile maturity? It's a complex question, often approached with a mix of coaching and training. The key, however, is not just in receiving advice but in its application. Agility is not a one-size-fits-all solution; it requires customization to fit the unique contours of each team and project. Just as in physical fitness, where a combination of cardio and resistance training yields the best results, in Agile, a blend of principles and practices tailored to specific team needs is essential.

Henson’s perspective highlights the importance of foundational Agile principles. Amidst the allure of new, cutting-edge techniques, the core tenets of Agile – as outlined in the Agile Manifesto and its 12 supporting principles – remain crucial. These principles provide a roadmap for genuine agility, guiding teams toward effective implementation and continuous improvement.

To aid in this endeavor, Henson has developed what he calls the 'Agile 12 Step Program.' Drawing from his background in psychology, this framework offers a non-prescriptive, flexible approach to understanding and applying Agile principles. It starts with fundamental questions about why an organization has chosen the Agile path and progresses through critical considerations about vision, strategy, and customer value.

For those seeking to assess and enhance their Agile maturity, Henson recommends a straightforward yet effective method. Using the Agile Manifesto and its 12 principles as a benchmark, teams can rate themselves on each principle, identifying areas of strength and those needing improvement. This self-assessment, whether through a simple check-mark system or a more detailed numeric rating, helps teams visualize their Agile journey and pinpoint specific areas for growth.

In the world of Agile, the journey is as important as the destination. It’s a continuous process of learning, adapting, and growing together. Understanding current realities, recognizing opportunities, and having a clear path forward are the keys to Agile success. The marathon of Agile transformation is filled with sprints – periods of intense focus and effort. But it's the sustained commitment to Agile principles and the willingness to adapt and grow that truly define an Agile organization.

As we navigate our Agile journeys, it’s vital to remember that the path to success is not linear. It’s a journey filled with learning, adjustments, and growth. The insights from experienced Agile coaches like V. Lee Henson offer valuable guidance, helping us understand the nuances of Agile implementation and maturity. With the right mindset and approach, any organization can harness the power of Agile to drive innovation, efficiency, and success.
